Project Overview

Located on a mature campus extending to 16.26 hectares, St. Gerard’s enjoys an elevated position, commanding vistas out toward Bray Head to the East and the Sugarloaf to the South.

The School first occupied the original Thornhill House building which has gradually been extended over the intervening years.

This new phase of expansion consists of new two-storey 1,948m² STEM wing (Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics) to the existing Senior School and a new two-storey 672m² wing to the existing Junior School, along with an enhanced campus road layout, including set-down and car-parking facilities.

The new Senior School wing is located in a two storey block on a north-south axis. A ‘link’ connects this new block with the existing school at its southern gable, such that the first floor level ties in with the ground floor level of the existing building.

The link element provides for a stepped, general purpose space that forms a social hub and primary circulation for the new wing. 4 no. science laboratories, associated prep rooms, a design communication graphics room, 5 no. classrooms, a multi-purpose room and ancillary facilities are all provided for in the new wing. The central circulation corridors on both levels are terminated by views out to the landscape beyond.

The Junior School wing has been developed around a newly formed double height top-lit central orientation space within the existing school building. New teaching and collaborative spaces are arranged around this on both levels.

These works required extensive modifications to the existing structure along with the re-arranging of existing classrooms and extension of the existing building footprint to the south. A new library at first floor level is given prominence with full-height glazing to take advantage of the breathtaking views. The new accommodation includes the provision of a new library, arts space, a collaboration studio, the replacement of 4 no. classrooms and inclusion of 1 no. additional classroom.

The  entire development has provided first class facilities that will accommodate and support the comprehensive educational needs of both the Senior & Junior School into the future.
