Recognised as a fundamental to meeting climate targets in Europe in the recent EPBD published earlier this year, Adaptive Reuse was given the spotlight by COADY Architects this month. There is increasing interest in the social housing sector, as well as with landlords and building owners generally, given the EU mandatory targets outlined in the EPBD towards reduction in use, and the cleaning up of energy in existing building stocks.

Each Member State has until 29 May 2026 to transpose this Directive into national law – most significantly for existing buildings the following:

📌 Reduce primary energy: 16% by 2030 and 26% by 2033

📌 Phasing out of fossil fuels

📌 National Building Renovation Plans

📌 Renovation Passports

📌 Establish one-stop-shops to support renovation schemes

📌 BERs are being also being re-cast and will include requirement for LCAs
